A master artist in marquetry, Mr. Alaa who is gifted in this field, creates the fine design of the marquetry pieces of our product range. Some of the designs on the commodes are traditional, but the majority is his creation, which displays his unique gifting in the art of marquetry. The majority of the designs on the commodes are unique to this family business for many decades, so you will not find them anywhere else. The craftsmen that carry out the design are highly skilled in the art of marquetry with many years of experience; the work is a demanding craft and remains the work of specialists.

What is marquetry?

It is an ancient art started as early as three thousands years ago. The Egyptians started it to decorate all the furniture of the pharos of Egypt. The art is labor intensive and used to take a long time and effort. In the sixteenth century a German gentleman design a tool to make it a little easier. Because the product is hand made, it takes a long time and it cannot be produce in mass production.

Marquetry is the coverage of the entire surface of a piece of furniture with many kinds of veneer in the form of a skillfully applied design or picture. This is different from Inlaying, which is the insertion of thin pieces of veneer, ivory, copper, etc., into a solid base.

Any design of marquetry on one of our products is made of many small pieces cut to shape and then, if needed, shaded by heat one piece at a time to give it the darker colour in some parts. These pieces are assembled together in a pattern to form the desired design, and in our product range it is according to Mr. Alaa's creation.  The design is drawn on the background veneers and each shape of the design is cut away. The resulting hole is used as a template to cut the correct veneer shape to fill it. Thus progressively the design is built up, piece by piece, each part being cut away from the background and a new piece of different veneer is fitted to form the design. It is a time consuming process for each commode contains hundreds of pieces.

There are some cheap immitation of the real marequetry, which is achieved by ahering a printed sheet to cover the surface of the product. We would like to emphasize that none of our product is immitation, our product is the real thing.
